# Introduction

Advanced Rules is a collection of house rules for the *Mothership Sci-Fi Horror RPG 1e,* written by myself, Violet Ballard, and a few other Mothership designers. It is modeled[^1] after the "Book 2" of advanced rules that accompanied many old Game Designers' Workshop releases[^2].

These are rules that I have developed as I’ve played my home game, written my own modules, and published modules with other people. Each new rule is small, but as a whole they provide an alternate experience focused more on player challenge compared to standard *Mothership 1e*.

These house rules also develop solo and Wardenless play as viable alternatives to the usual, Warden-led experience.

This book also serves as a manual for wardens and designers who are looking to create their own *Mothership 1e* content. It's not just about running and playing the game differently; it's a handbook for creating interesting things.

[^1]: The development of *Advanced Dungeons & Dragons* (1981) and its usage of rules from *Dragon* magazine is also an influence. The *Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia* (1991) also made an impact on the design of *Advanced Rules* although I am not attempting to present a full system of rules in this book.
